DMF for Seniors: A Proud Tradition of Caring

The Don Mills Foundation for Seniors, is a not-for-profit, charitable organization of volunteers and professionals committed to serving the well-being and social needs of seniors through a broad range of services, programs and care. The Don Mills Foundation operates two locations each providing services to seniors in the Don Mills community: Thompson House Home for the Aged and E. P. Taylor Place Senior Adult Centre. Both facilities are located at 1 Overland Drive and our E. P. Taylor Place Community Services division is located at 875 Don Mills Road.

Thompson House, a 136 bed Home for the Aged opened in 1969 and has since developed a reputation for providing excellent care and support for both residential and extended care residents. A multi-disciplinary approach to resident care enhances physical, social, mental and spiritual functioning through the skilled services of nurses, physicians, adjuvants, pastors and physiotherapists.

E. P. Taylor Place Senior Adult Centre opened in 1976 as a multi-purpose older adult centre offering a range of social, recreational, educational and health programs. The Centre has an active annual membership of over 1000. In 1997 DMF for Seniors opened the Overland Club which serves the needs of pre-retired or newly retired older adults. An exciting new initiative and program of both centres is our state-of-the-art Computer and Internet Training Centre. Over the years the Centre has been an integral part of learning and personal development for thousands of seniors in our community

E. P. Taylor Place Community Services began in 1983 with a client intervention and friendly visiting program. Since its inception the services have expanded to include: transportation, Meals on Wheels, congregate dining, self-help widows group, security check, home help, homemaking, central assessment and specialized day programs.

In 1987, the Board of Directors of the Don Mills Foundation identified the strong need for specialized programs for individuals with Alzheimer Disease and related dementias. The Board felt this need was so great that the Day Program was divided into two groups. One group meets the needs of clients with Alzheimer Disease and related dementias and the other group is designed for physically frail seniors.

Volunteers play a vital role in all aspects of the Don Mills Foundation. More than 500 volunteers contribute over 30,000 hours per year by serving the needs of our seniors and their families through E. P. Taylor Place and Thompson House.

The Don Mills Foundation for Seniors is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of community volunteers representing local business and corporate leaders, health care providers, and family members of our clients and/or residents. The Board of Directors is elected on an annual basis by the membership of the Don Mills Foundation.
